Tackle dehydration with tea this Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, it is essential to start thinking about how you will keep your body in top working order. After all, this is the time of year to over-indulge for many people and too many late nights can start to take their toll. One of the most common problems at this time of year is dehydration - with alcohol in full flow and all the rushing about seeing family and friends, it can be difficult to keep fluid levels up. Finding time for drinking tea throughout the day will help boost your intake of fluids and make you feel much better once the festivities start to subside.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the body is getting rid of fluids at a faster rate than usual - this might be through sweating or even regularly going to the toilet. Alcohol is a well-known cause of dehydration for both these reasons and over the Christmas period, consumption is often increased. It is important to keep the body hydrated otherwise there can be all sorts of repercussions, ranging from sunken eyes to suffering from a dry mouth.

How can tea help?

Tea is packed with antioxidants that can help the body replenish itself - and of course the water will help replace some of the liquids you have lost. A study published a few years ago and funded by the Tea Advisory Panel showed that there is no significant difference between black tea and water when it comes to hydrating the body. In fact, the researchers even went as far as to conclude that black tea "offered similar hydrating properties to water", making it a great option if you have over-indulged a little over the festive season.
