Chai is a combination of perfectly balanced infusions and spices that make it a popular blend with tea drinkers all over the world. It is based on a black tea that is mixed with cloves and star anise, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and vanilla. It is perfect for those cold winter’s nights, but refreshing on days that are a little hotter than usual.
The black tea in Chai is rich in antioxidants. Cinnamon is thought to increase circulation and make breathing easier, as well as increase awareness and vitality while reducing fatigue. Meanwhile, cardamom is said to benefit the lungs, kidneys and heart. Nutmeg has been used for centuries to ease sciatica and aid the digestion of heavy foods and ginger has been used to treat conditions such as impotence and motion sickness.
Hint: Chai is best brewed by placing one teaspoon of loose leaf tea into a 200ml teapot, before leaving it for three to five minutes in boiling water.
Add honey to sweeten if you prefer a sweeter brew and don’t forget a splash of milk. For the best effect, serve on a chilly winter’s night to help warm you up from the outside in!
